SUPPLIES FOR GOAT PRODUCERS:
Keep in mind that most of these products are off label for goats, but still work effectively to prevent or treat.
Wormers
Cydectin:
Synanthic cattle drench: 2.5ml /100 lbs is label, it is best if double or triple dosed to kill tape worms.
De-lousers: I use Cylence cattle pour on in a stripe down the top line: for kids use 2ml , for animals 50-100 lbs use 4ml's, and for animals over 100 lbs use 6ml 's, and for very large bucks use 8ml .'s
Vaccines:
Covexin 8: For the Clostridial diseases. 3ml SQ first dose, and 2ml Sq in 21 days, then once annually.
Super Poly Bac B Somnus: for pneumonia prevention: This is a cattle vaccine, and is a 1ml dose SQ for goats, repeat in 14-21 days with .05 ml . It works wonders to protect against Pasturella hemolytica, Multocida, and A6, Haemophilus Somnus, and Samonella.
CL vaccine: There are two types. The Casebac from Colorado Serum Co., the Autogenous from various laboratories. The one i use is case bac from colorado serum , and has to be given every 6 months.. This vaccine should always be given SQ
Drugs to have on hand for emergencies:
NOTE: Some of these drugs are available through your veterinarian only.
Long acting Penicillin: OTC
Banamine: RX- smooth muscle relaxant, helps with pain, fever, respiratory distress, it is anti-prostaglandin (helps prevent loss of pregnancy due to injury or stress) antiendotoxin (helps to prevent organ damage due to toxins produced by infectious organisms).
Nuflor: RX.: Drug of choice for pneumonia. 6cc SQ/100 lbs loading dose, followed by 3cc/100lbs SQ per day for 4 days minimum. Cattle regime doesn't work well on goats. They relapse and die.
Epinephrine: used to treat anaphylactic shock. Regular dose is 1cc IM/100lbs. A drop of epinephrine can be put under the tongue of a newborn kid to stimulate heart and respiratory function. When a kid is not breathing, but the heart is still beating after a difficult labor and or delivery, this will save a life.
Vitamins:
Thiamin: Vitamin B1, Rx, used to treat and prevent Polio. Any infection, or stress can precipitate death of rumen and small intestine organisms that produce all B complex vitamins. Pathogenic organism overgrowth can occur precipitating polio. I prefer the 500 mg/ml Thiamin injectable.
Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamine: used to treat anemia, appetite stimulant B Complex vitamins: Used for stress and appetite loss due to illness
Vitamin AD&E injectable : Used to combat deficiency due to drought. Goats do not carry a pregnancy well, lactate well, and tend to have retained placentas when there is vitamin A. deficiency. Alfalfa can be supplemented to augment the codition, but often AD&E injection 2cc IM or SQ will speed up the process. The usual source of vitamin A is green forage. Free choice mineral souldbe available at all times with a 2:1 Calcium Prosphorousbalance. Mineral should contain all trace minerals available.
Selenim deficiency: Selenim products: Rx, MuSE, BoSE
Polyserum: OTC This is antibodies to Actinomyces Pyogenes, P. Hemolytica, P. multocida, Samonella, and E Coli.: Passive immunity to these diseases during illness or injury.
CD antitoxin: Treatment for Enterotoxemia types C&D
Tetanus antitoxin: Used to prevent Tetanus in wounded, castrated, or dehorned animals.
Pepto Bismol-Antacid: anti-gas, antibacterial: used to treat bloat which is usually Enterotoxemia. It is also used in scours to help prevent dehydration.
7% Iodine: treat, disinfect wounds
Scarlet oil: antibacterial, keeps flies off wounds
Furacin ointment: to dip ear tags in to prevent infection at application.
Wound Kote: Wound spray that seals wounds to moisture and contamination.
Listerine: used to clean skin for injection, to clean eyes of pus from Pinkeye. Used as general disinfectant, much better than alcohol.
50% Dextrose: OTC for use in pregnancy toxemia and to make Revive Amino Acid Solution (not the concentrate) OTC ingredient in Revive
Cal-Dex: A dextrose product with calcium used in preg. Toxemia, or milk fever.
Calf Pac: live probiotic product in powder form, that has 5 live organisms and will keep without refrigeration.
Vet Wrap: used to cover wounds
Other Supplies Needed
3cc syringes
12cc syringes
18 gauge needles ½"or ¾" long
20 gauge needles ½" or 3/8" inches long

REVIVE
*Revive *AM 500ML 50% Dextrose 500ML Amino Acid Solution (50ml if it is the concentrate) 200ML Calcium Gluconate** 20ML B complex 2 grams Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) I use the injectable 5 ML B12 (3,000mcg/ml) 5ML 500mg/ml Thiamin* Give 200cc 3X/day Use a clean half gallon canning jar to make and store this. Keep in a cool dark place. B vitamins are destroyed by light. Scald the jar with boiling water after you clean it, and turn it upside down on a clean towel. Scald the lid also. When you mix ingredients, do not touch the mouth of the jar, or contaminate the contents. I store it in a dark place, because B vitamins are destroyed by light. Do not add water to the Revive until you are ready to give it.
Mix 50:50 with water.
If you need to warm it, set it in a pan of hot water. DO NOT MICROWAVE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- *If you buy the injectable, it is usually 4cc of the 500mg/ml vitamin C. If you need to use over the counter product, you can use the crushed pills from the grocery store. I prefer the injectable, as I like to give it IM to does with mastitis, it really helps healing. **Calcium Gluconate is not necessary in Revive unless the doe is exhibiting symptoms of calcium deficiency. The most common first symptom is tender feet: Walking on egg shells.
MAGIC
*Magic Recipe PM *1 pint of corn oil 1 pint of molasses 2 pints of Karo syrup I warm it just a bit. Give 2-3 ounces 3-4 times a day.
ENTEROTOXEMIA TREATMENT
This sounds like Enterotoxemia to me. I do not EVER give vegetable oil of any kind, it is digestible and aggravates the situation. I treat as follows: For a kid: 5cc oral penicillin, 5cc SQ Penicillin, 15cc Pepto Bismol oral, 7cc CD Antitoxin SQ, and Banamine 1cc/100lbs IM. Repeat the SQ Penicillin and CD antitoxin in 4-6 hours. Restart the Rumen with Calf pac in 12 hours. Enterotoxemia is caused by Clostridia species bacteria that attacks in the gut, and systemically at the same time. So you treat topically with the oral penicillin and Pepto, then parenterally with the SQ Penicillin and CD antitoxin. It works if you get to it fast enough. Mineral oil can be helpful, it is not digestible. NEVER USE VEGETABLE OIL IN A GOAT THAT IS BLOATING, OR YOU SUSPECT HAS OVEREATEN. Coni Ross
PNEUMONIA TREATMENT
-This is directly from Coni Ross:
6cc/100lbs of Nuflor given the first day and then 3cc/100lbs SQ each day after that for at least 4 more days (a total of 5 days treatment) Goats are smaller and have faster metabolisms, they need to be treated every day or they tend to relapse and die. They do not respond to the cattle recommended dosage on the bottle.
Also give 10cc (for a average size goat) of Poly serum or Bovi Sera (they are essentially the same I use Bovi Sera because it seems to be cheaper than the poly serum) This is given on Day 1 and day 3 if not better.
You can also give 1cc/100lbs of Banamine for pain and it is a smooth muscle relaxer and will help relax the lungs and essentially help them breath easier.
If kids do not respond to this treatment after the first 24 hours you can also treat with Albon 500mg-750mg twice a day.
I have started vaccinating all my does and bucks for pneumonia and I use Super Poly Bac B Somnus. It is given at the rate of 1cc initial does and 14-21 days later 1/2cc and a annual booster of 1/2cc.
POLIO TREATMENT
I would treat her for polio. What happens frequently: something upsets the normal bacterial balance in the gut, so that the beneficial bacteria that digest food, and manufacture thiamine are killed. Bacterial overgrowth of bad bacteria occurs. This causes thiamine deficiency (polio) and the goat must be treated. I give 10cc oral penicillin to kill the gut bacteria, and 10cc SQ of Penicillin to work systemically, and 1,000 mg thiamine half SQ and Half IM as a first dose. Then later in the day, 500mg Thiamine SQ. Treatment must continue with the thiamine until the goat is completely recovered. On day two, I restart the rumen bacteria with CALF PAC, a live probiotic powder that has 5 live organisms that will colonize and grow to do the right job in the gut. I would give the thiamine at least twice a day, 500mg as long as there are symptoms. I usually give it oral after I restart the gut.
Tetanus Check her eyelid. Tetanus mimics polio and vice versa. Tickle the eyelashes of the goat, and if the nictating membrane (third eyelid) pops out into view it is Tetanus. I have successfully treated tetanus: I give the goat an entire 10cc Vial of Tetanus antitoxin per day, a minimum of 10cc SQ of Penicillin (drug of choice for Clostridial infection). Treatment needs to be repeated every day until the recovery is complete. The larger the goat, the more penicillin is needed: really large goats may need 15-20cc SQ per day. I try to keep an entire box of Tetanus antitoxin on hand for just such emergencies. I will tube feed the animal if it can't swallow. Typical posture: down, limbs stiff and extended back: Neck stiff, and extended over the top of the back with the top of the head reaching toward the rump. The back is arched backwards, and jaw clenched. The animal can not drink or eat. Stimulation causes contractions to increase, so the animal should be put in a darkened area, and kept quiet. Grown goats need at least a gallon of water per day, and I usually mix some simple revive, and give mixed 50:50 with water with a feeding tube. Veterinary assistance is helpful if sedatives are needed to quiet spasmodic contractions. This requires attention every day, and the animal needs to be turned, and kept off the ground so that pressure sores don't develop.
URINARY CALCULI TREATMENT
This was in a post that was Coni's treatment. 1. 3 lemons 2. 3 garlic cloves peeled 3. 1 red onion ( 1/4 piece of onion 4. 1/2 cup of water Squeeze the lemon juice out of the lemons. Into a blender, then add the 3 garlic cloves, and onion. Add water and blend well because you don't want to plug your drench gun. Simmer for about 15 minutes on the stove in a sauce pan. Drench goat every two hours. It's acid base,so it dissolves the stone (calculi) quickly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` The following is from Pat which is what we used today because it was the quick and easy to prepare. Juice of one Lemon 2 Tablespoons of Baking Soda 1 Cup of Water Drench the buck with 20 cc, 3 times a day the first day, 2 time a day for two days, then once a day until the urine is full and steady. Keep it up, every other day, then twice a week, if the animal is comfortable and has a successful flow. This is an old recipe that my grandfather used to use in the 30s. My dad swears it works every time. We've only had one buck with UC, and it definitely worked on him. But we did catch it early - when he very first starting having problems. He had it once - and never had it again (although we were always concerned). We dosed him for close to a month....kept him for another year plus. Treatment Pete Peters has used on his bucks Mix 2 teaspoons of ammonia chloride in a 20 ounce coke bottle filled with hot water.
Shake it until dissolved.
Drench with all of it once. Says has never had to repeat.
